Philippines: Padre Pio Church in Libis, Quezon City

I guess each one one us has his/her own sanctuary — a place you go to when you just want to keep still and be quiet. Having to live in a city, I sometimes find it hard to even hear myself think! Even the gazillion Starbucks spread across Metro Manila does not provide a breathing space since they are usually crowded with students and professionals alike. And no, I am not a homebody, so my room does not count as a sanctuary for me. I like the idea of driving towards a certain place that is not home, but feels like home to me. I was looking for a place where I can stay for as long as I want until I am finally able to sort myself out. Believe it or not, I finally found my sanctuary…and surprise, surprise — it’s not a spa, it’s a church! :)

For some reason, my hubby and I are always drawn to stop by the Padre Pio Church in Libis, Quezon City. Actually, it is officially called as the St. Pio Chapel…but I am stubborn and prefer to call it a church. Hihihi! Why? Because I think it is too grand to be called a chapel. When I first went there, I immediately appreciated its clean and simple facade, which was some sort of a replica of the church where Padre Pio has carried out his mission for many years — the Church of Our Lady of Grace in San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy. Here, take a look at how similar they look:

When I entered the church, I was awed at how beautiful the interiors are. You can really see that every nook and cranny of the place was well thought of. In fact, it is the only church I’ve been to that has thoughtfully created a glass-enclosed room for families with small children. They call this special room as the Calandra Room. The glass was put there to minimize the racket that small children unintentionally make while inside the church.  Isn’t that nice?

Right on top of the Calandra Room is the Bishop Jesus Sison Memorial Hall. I think this is some sort of an audio-visual room; but on Sundays, since the church is really packed, they also allow churchgoers to go up there and participate in the Holy Eucharist by watching the celebration through a big white screen. Just like the church, this place is also air-conditioned.

There’s also a small outdoor area just behind the church, which is again thoughtfully equipped with wall fans, air coolers, tables, and chairs. There, you can also light candles on designated areas. You wouldn’t miss this part of the church, which they call as the Rev. Fr. Alessio Parente Patio, because you have to pass through this place on your way to the comfort room. And, to my delight, there are alcohol pumps right outside the toilets so that everyone can disinfect their hands after doing their thing. I am so happy with the people who thought of putting a disinfecting station in the church because even the biggest malls in Manila don’t give out alcohol for free! Oh, there’s a vendo machine there, too! Amazing!

Right next to the vendo machine is a glass door that leads you to the little store that sells anything and everything Padre Pio — from rosaries, to prayer books, to statues, to stickers, to magnets, etc. I just want to share with you that among all the things I bought there (there are quite a lot already), my favorite is a collection of Padre Pio books written by Fr. Marcellino Iasenzaniro. It has three volumes and basically the books talk about the personal experiences of people with Padre Pio and the answered prayers / miracles that they obtained through his intercession. It is such a blessing to read these books:

Lastly, they also have a special place for the church’s collection of angel figurines and live birds. They call this place the Garden Angel Aviary, and it is located at the right side of the church.

Truly, it is one of the most beautiful churches I have ever been to in my entire life. I suggest that you take the time to go there while there’s no Mass going on so you can read all the testimonials of Padre Pio devotees that are framed and hanged on the church walls. You can also write Padre Pio a letter and drop in one of their special boxes. I have personally obtained an answered prayer days (yes, days!) after I wrote to Padre Pio, my greatest intercessor. You can read about it here.

Now that we are based here in Paris, France…I find myself always missing my little sanctuary in the Philippines. I dare say that the Padre Pio Church in Libis is not just a place of worship, but a place where one can commune with his soul and with his God.

The chapel (“church” to you ;) ) is really great! In my book, it’s one of the best places to go for a spiritual experience. The Fr. Parente Patio (and the chapel near it) is especially a good place for finding that solitude you need :)

Some notes:

* The reason they can’t call it “church” is that only parishes and cathedrals (and any “higher” churches) can use the term “church”; a lesser church or any such church privately-built can only be called a “chapel”. I know, Catholic bureaucracy :-|

* There’s a similar “children’s room” in the newly-opened chapel at the SM Megamall. Don’t know if you’ve been there. The children’s room is discreetly placed near the entrance, to the left of the altar. The new Mega chapel, I think, opened just a few months ago. You may also want to check that out, too.

* Have you seen the video “The Last Mass of Padre Pio”? (I think they’re selling DVDs of it at the Padre Pio chapel.) I haven’t seen it myself, just saw excerpts from a TV documentary I saw…so I learned, the mass took place just one day before Padre Pio died :( And the excerpt I saw showed him to be so frail he had to be assisted by other priests to descend the altar. It’s such a moving scene.

Hi Monette,

I was reading your blogs and believe it or not i was getting goosebumps while reading it. I saw the feature in Rated K last Sunday (Sept. 13, 2009) my wife is the one watching tv then and I am listening music in my iPod and the Rated K feature caught my attention. Then yesterday my wife and I go to Libis immediately and you are absolutely right! The place was very very very nice “yong tipo bang makakalimutan mo lahat ng problema mo pag nandon ka at ayaw mo ng umalis”. I think I found a new friend in Saint Pio and a new friend again in you, because we both have the same faith in Him. Please contact me if it is ok with you my e-mail address is rollie.bartolome@yahoo.com and my ym id is y2k_wiz. I’ll be expecting to hear from you soon. Have a nice day and God Bless.

Hi Pao!

Thanks for the notes! I’ve learned a lot…specially about Catholic bureaucracy…hihihi! :)

I wish I can visit the chapel in Megamall, but since I am on the other side of the world right now, I will have to wait until I get back home. Yes, Philippines is still my home…and despite the pollution, traffic, and corruption (sigh), I still miss it everyday.

I have to go and see where I can get the video you mentioned. It’ll be interesting to finally get to see Padre Pio in action. I am always intrigued why his Masses last for hours and hours…and they said that he’s really in pain during the Consecration part because he relives Jesus’ suffering at the Calvary every time he says Mass. And to take all that for 50 years??! My, my, my… :0

I’m happy you share my love for that little chapel in Libis. Say a prayer for me when you visit there, ok? I terribly miss that place. :(

Thanks for visiting my blog. :)

So, you finally visited the place! It’s really nice, isn’t it?! I’ve noted your email address and I’ll send you an email so you’ll know mine. Warm personal regards to your wife and I wish you both wonderful Padre Pio moments. :)

Hi! I have always been fascinated by the many amazing stories about Padre Pio. Thus I was so happy when I heard and read that there is a shrine here in Libis dedicated to the saint. I’ve been working here in Libis for the past five years but have no idea whatsoever where to find the exact location of the shrine. Could you kindly help me out on this? Thanks

If you’re commuting: you can take the MRT and stop at the Ortigas Center station. Walk to Robinsons Galeria and then take a bus going to Rosario (Pasig) or Taytay. Tell the bus driver you’re stopping at Rosario or C5. Stop at Rosario Junction (just after the overpass) and then cross the street. Take a jeep going to Citibank or Cubao. Stop when you see Honda Pasig and Floor Center…the Padre Pio Chapel is just between these two establishments (there’s a signboard with Padre Pio’s head shot on it :) Fare for both the bus and the jeep are just the minimum fare.

You can also try stopping at the Araneta Center-Cubao MRT station and take the Citibank/Rosario jeep…just that, I don’t know where in Araneta Center you can find the jeepney terminal :( I usually take the jeep from Eastwood going to Cubao, not the other way around.

Hello Monette,
I inform you that there is a Padre Pio prayers group in Paris.
It is animated by cappucini.
We pray the first saterday of each month.
I will not go for the two next months (because in november I will be in San Giovanni Rotondo with 20 others persons coming from France and 30 persons coming from Italy, and in october I will be in Italy to finalyse the coordination of this trip)
In june, I was in Doha for my job and I attended in a philippine mass. It was beautiful.

Can i ask if you know, the easiest way to the Church (say from Cubao or Megamall)? i have to find the easiest and most comfortable way to the Church by public transpo beacuse my friend is restricted to light travels only. i hope you could help me. We are coming from South of Manila and we really need to find a way to reach the Church the easiest way. So much thanks to you. May God bless you and may Padre Pio guide you always.

Hi Monette,

I guess the greatest miracle that everyone’s been praying for is change: change in your heart and soul. We have to change for good so that Padre Pio will bless us and hear our intercessions….How can our Lord hear our prayers if we will not change for good and live a simple life? I know everyone needs a miracle, but for me, the greatest miracle is change!!

Hello! I’m Italian, and I was surprised to learn that there is a chapel dedicated to Padre Pio over in the Philippines. Well, it seems far away from Padre Pio’s homeland, but I think despite their physical distance from one another Italians and Filipinos have a lot in common in a cultural sense! So I was wondering: does Padre Pio have a big following in the Philippines?

Thanks.

I was blessed to join a pilgrimage to the Shrines of Italy last September. Included on the itinerary was a visit to San Giovanni Rotondo to view the uncorrupt body of St. Pio. I was ecstatic and tears welled in my eyes as I prayed and viewed St. Pio whose peaceful countenance only confirmed that He is now in the bosom of God Almighty. He had his resurrection after much sufferings, just like our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

My devotion to St. Pio began when my family and friends visited the chapel in Eastwood which is under the custody of Mr. Rodriguez (can’t remember his first name) whom we met then. He told us the long mystical story about how he started to build a shrine and got to be the custodian of St. Pio’s many relics.

As I entered the chapel, I felt POWER inside it.

As a reply to Emilia’s question if there is a big following in the Philippines, I must say there should be by now, because Mr. Rodriguez and his group are travelling all over the Philippines promotiong the devotion to St. Pio.

Dear Monette,

Yes I have been there several times when I stayed at a condo in Libis. I am staying now in Mandaluyong and I surely missed the church and St. Pio so I decided to visit the the church again. I came across your blog and very inspiring indeed. Thanks for this blog as this will surely help in encouraging devotions to a great saint our St. Pio.
